Jefferson-Morgan School District Pre-K Program

Welcome to the Jefferson-Morgan Pre-K Program

Pre-Kindergarten 2010-2011

The Jefferson-Morgan School District has made a commitment to continue Pre-K as we begin our second year.  We continue to have two Pre-K classrooms—one operated by the district and the other classroom managed by Community Action Southwest.  Many of last year’s Pre-K parents have commented how happy they were with both Pre-K classrooms and how well their children are functioning in Kindergarten.  The parents’ comments mirror Dr. Robertson’s statistics--students who went to Pre-K last year are doing as well as or better in Kindergarten this year than those who did not attend any form of Pre-K.

Both Pre-K classrooms service approximately 50-60 % of the four year old population in our district, are located at the Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School and use the Creative Curriculum for Preschool.   Mrs. Anita Mullen and Mrs. Grimes are the Pre-K teachers.

History

Planning for the 2007-2008 Pre-K program was a combined effort that included Community Action Southwest, Greene County Child Care Information Services, United Way of Westmoreland County, Greene County Community Engagement, Intermediate Unit #1, First Student Transportation, The Jefferson-Morgan School District Board of Directors, District Administration, and The Jefferson Morgan Education Association

The 2007-2008 program was a successful and collaborative agreement between the Jefferson-Morgan School District and Community Action Southwest through the Pre-K Counts grant (private/public partnership) for one district operated Pre-K classroom servicing 17 Jefferson-Morgan four year olds. This grant money was used for classroom materials, supplies & classroom furniture along with staff development trainings, and partial funding for a facilitator/coordinator.  Also for 2007-2008, J-M housed another Pre-K classroom--Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts Classroom (A Gov. Rendell Initiative). This classroom was operated by Community Action Southwest additionally servicing approximately 17 four year olds.

Early Childhood "Getting Ready" Workshop

On Tuesday, April 13, 2010, Mrs. Dolan, Mrs. Headley, and Mrs. Gustovich provided a fantastic parent workshop called "Getting Ready" for parents of Pre-K and Kindergarten students who will be making the transition from Pre-K to Kindergarten or from Kindergarten to First grade.  Parents were able to have open discussion with the teachers regarding transition.  Also, the parents received informative literature about transition along with children's books and home activities.
