Student Transportation and Bus Pass Procedures
Posted Date: 08/18/26 (08:11 AM)
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we want to provide families with important information regarding student transportation and the use of temporary bus passes.
Student safety remains our highest priority. At the beginning of each school year, bus ridership can fluctuate as families establish their routines and students begin regularly using District transportation. While students may be assigned to a bus, not every student uses District transportation each day.
During the first few weeks of school, we will be reviewing actual bus ridership and capacity on each route. Some students may consistently be transported to and from school by a parent, guardian, or other family member rather than riding their assigned bus. This review will allow us to better understand the actual available capacity on each bus before determining whether any additional limitations on bus passes are necessary.
At this time, several of our buses are projected to be near capacity. However, we do not want to unnecessarily restrict transportation requests until we have had an opportunity to see what actual daily ridership looks like.
Temporary Bus Pass Requests
During this initial review period, temporary bus pass requests will continue to be considered on a case by case basis and will depend on available seating and capacity on the requested bus.
If a bus cannot safely accommodate additional riders, requests will be prioritized based on need. Transportation related to established after school childcare needs will receive priority over requests for students to ride home with friends, classmates, or relatives for social purposes.
Requests for students to ride home with friends or for other social visits will be considered only when adequate space is available. A bus pass cannot be guaranteed simply because a request has been submitted.
Assigned Transportation
Students should generally use their regularly assigned morning pick up location and afternoon drop off location. Consistent transportation arrangements allow our school offices, transportation provider, and bus drivers to maintain accurate information regarding where students are expected to be each day.
Families who have a consistent childcare arrangement or another recurring transportation need should communicate that information with the school as early as possible.
Why Capacity Matters
Bus capacities are established for student safety. Allowing additional riders on buses that are already at or near capacity can create safety concerns and may result in a bus being unable to accommodate all students assigned to that route.
Our goal during the first few weeks of school is to determine the actual number of students regularly riding each bus before making any broader changes to our procedures. Once we have a better understanding of consistent ridership, we will determine whether additional restrictions or procedures are necessary for specific routes.
We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we work through the beginning of the school year. Our goal is to remain as flexible as reasonably possible for families while ensuring that student safety and the transportation needs of our regularly assigned riders remain our priority.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support of the Jefferson Morgan School District.
Sincerely,
Jefferson-Morgan Administration
