Remote Learning Day Information & Expectations

At Jefferson-Morgan School District, the safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. When circumstances such as inclement weather, facility concerns, or other unexpected events prevent students from attending school in person, the District may utilize a Remote Learning Day to allow instruction to continue from home.

Our Remote Learning Days are designed to provide students with meaningful educational opportunities while offering families flexibility in completing assignments.

General Remote Learning Day Expectations

All regular Remote Learning Days will follow an asynchronous learning format. This means students are not required to attend live virtual classes and may complete their assignments independently from home.

  • Google Classroom: All assignments will be posted on Google Classroom.

  • Assignment Posting Time: Teachers will post assignments by 10:00 a.m.

  • Teacher Availability: Teachers will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to answer questions, provide assistance, and support students.

  • Attendance: Attendance will be taken on Remote Learning Days. Students are expected to participate and complete their assigned work.

  • Technology: Students should use their district-issued Chromebooks or another appropriate device to access Google Classroom.

Elementary School Expectations (Grades K–6)

Elementary students will complete assignments provided by their classroom teachers through Google Classroom.

Elementary Remote Learning Requirements:

  1. Log into Google Classroom to access assignments posted by 10:00 a.m.

  2. Complete assigned activities and coursework with assistance from a parent or guardian when necessary.

  3. Students have up to five (5) days to complete and submit their Remote Learning Day assignments.

  4. Teachers will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to answer questions and provide assistance.

  5. Students are expected to complete their assignments in accordance with building attendance and participation procedures.

We recognize that younger students may require additional support and that family schedules vary. The five-day submission window is intended to provide flexibility while ensuring students remain engaged in learning.

Middle/High School Expectations (Grades 7–12)

Middle and high school students are expected to independently access and complete their Remote Learning Day assignments through Google Classroom.

Middle/High School Remote Learning Requirements:

  1. Log into Google Classroom and review assignments for each scheduled class.

  2. Teachers will post assignments by 10:00 a.m.

  3. All assignments must be completed and submitted by 11:59 p.m. (midnight) on the Remote Learning Day.

  4. Teachers will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to answer questions and provide assistance.

  5. Students are responsible for completing assigned coursework and following building attendance and participation procedures.

Students are encouraged to manage their time appropriately throughout the day and communicate with their teachers if they need assistance.

Attendance and Student Participation

Remote Learning Days count as instructional days, and student participation is expected.

Attendance will be taken in accordance with procedures established by each building principal. Students are responsible for accessing their assignments and completing required work within the established timelines.

Families should contact their child's school if a student is absent, unable to participate, or experiences circumstances that prevent completion of assigned work.

Technology or Internet Access Concerns

We understand that technology issues or internet connectivity may occasionally create challenges for families.

If a student experiences difficulty accessing Google Classroom, completing assignments, or connecting to the internet, families should contact their child's teacher or building office as soon as possible.

Our goal is to work with families to ensure students have an opportunity to complete their educational responsibilities.

How Will Families Know When a Remote Learning Day Is Announced?

The District will communicate Remote Learning Day announcements through the following channels:

  • ParentSquare notifications, including text messages, phone calls, and emails

  • Jefferson-Morgan School District website

  • Official District social media accounts

  • Local television stations, including KDKA, WPXI, and WTAE

Whenever possible, the District will communicate a decision before 6:00 a.m. or the evening before.

Extended Remote Learning Closures

In the event of an extended school closure, the District may implement a separate Extended Remote Learning Plan that includes live virtual instruction and a structured daily schedule.

If this becomes necessary, families will receive additional information, schedules, and expectations before implementation.
